The Women in Maritime of West and Central Africa (WIMOWCA) is a sub-regional body of Women in Maritime, inaugurated and launched by H.E Kitack Lim, the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on 23 July 2021, in Accra, Ghana to champion the promotion and empowerment of women in the maritime industry, build and strengthen maritime capacity in the sub-region amongst numerous objectives.
WIMOWCA is therefore the link organization between the IMO and women in maritime in the West and Central African region. The Association aligns itself with IMO’s strategic approach towards enhancing the contribution of women as key maritime stakeholders through capacity-building programs and developing institutional framework to incorporate gender diversity in its (IMO's) maritime/shipping policies and procedures, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
WIMOWCA fully participates in all IMO and UN maritime celebrations, such as the newly inaugurated Women in Maritime Day (18 May), Day of the Seafarers (25th June), World Oceans Day and World Maritime Day (September 28), among others
WIMOWCA’s Regional Executive Council Members are made up of seasoned maritime executives drawn from Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone countries in West and Central Africa. The leadership and members of WIMOWCA have continued to act as resource persons at notable maritime events, organized by both public and private sectors, bringing to bear their vast knowledge on topical and emerging trends in the industry.
